Below you will find some helpful tips on becoming a Kansas independent insurance agent.

LICENSING
Your first step should be to get licensed. You won’t be able to sell insurance without it. Kansas independent insurance agents are not required to take a pre-licensing class, but it is suggested if you are new to the industry. If you are interested in a class contact:

A.D. Banker & Company
5000 College Blvd, Suite 120
Overland Park, KS 66211
800-255-0408

If you prefer self-study you may choose to simply purchase the study materials and work through the content on your own. Self-study materials can be purchased through:

Kansas Association of Insurance Agents (KAIA)
815 SW Topeka Blvd
Topeka, KS 66612
800-229-7048

You will need to work with the Kansas Insurance Department to find an exam and to get your license.

STARTING AN AGENCY
Starting an agency from scratch is challenging, but very possible. Many agents who are new to the industry will choose to work for an established Kansas independent insurance agency. Some agency owners will even allow you to grow your own book of business under their tutelage and then take it with you when you are ready to start your own agency.

Should you decide to start your own agency, you will want to contact the Kansas Association of Insurance Agents. KAIA is a member-driven trade association whose mission is to meet the professional development and business needs of Kansas independent insurance agents.

Independent insurance agents must have contracts with insurance companies before you can begin selling their products. Through KAIA, Kansas independent insurance agents can sell insurance without already having their own contracts.  How? KAIA owns a whole sale agency called Agency Services Corporation of Kansas. The sole purpose of AScK is to help Kansas independent insurance agents grow a book of business through access to personal and commercial lines markets. Agencies who are successful with AScK will often receive their own contract and graduate from needing this service.

SALES TRAINING
A background in sales will definitely come in handy in your new profession as an independent insurance agent; however, it is not a requirement. With the right mind-set you can acquire the skills you need to be successful.
There are two training programs that are well-suited for independent insurance agents in Kansas.

1. Strategic Sales Training – a great class for those who are new to the business or perhaps for those who are wanting a refresher course. It is a short two-and-a-half day training and provides lots of opportunity for independent study.  Click here to find out more about the Strategic Sales Training.

2. Elite Force Sales Training - If you have completed Strategic Sales Training and you are looking for something a little bit more involved, consider Elite Force Sales Training, a twelve-day training that is broken up into three day parts throughout the year.  Click here for more information about the Elite Force Sales Training.

HELPFUL TRAINING LINKS

As a Kansas independent insurance agent you will be required to update your license through completion of continuing education courses. There are a myriad of resources available online to meet this requirement. Those agents who aspire to maintain a certain level of professionalism are careful to take courses from trusted sources identified by the Kansas Insurance Department.

Recommended education providers include:
